Giveaway and Review: Bag of Love July Asia's Beloved Gems

Take a deep breath girls, you're about to swoon...

HOW CUTE IS THE BAG! It's so girly and lacy and pink and gold and white and fluffy and you can't tell, but it's even softly padded and aaaaaaah I wanna take it to bed! If ever there was a makeup bag made exclusively for me, this is what it would have looked like. Yes, I'm utterly and unabashedly girly and helplessly attached to the container of beauty samples. No, that's not strange. It's definitely fitting for the Asian theme, and I'm definitely acting the stereotypical Asian girl right now.

Admit it. Your girly side is battling your grown-up, no-nonsense self. Just admit defeat, because this post is unapologetically full of pink!

Look at the crazy amount of items in the bag! It took me forever trying to fit them all in to take a photo. There were two brands that came in sets and couldn't fit inside the bag - Etude House and The Face Shop, which happen to be Asian bigwigs who have made their place in Malaysia.

Actually, the only Asian skincare product I've used is Hada Labo, so I knew the July bag would be a much-needed intervention to 'pandang ke timur'. LOL

The rest were tucked neatly inside the bag, wrapped inside a plastic with the lids taped down. I feel like a broken record bringing up MiMi's excellent customer service again, but she definitely learned from past experience to keep us happy. All of them arrived in perfect condition without any leakage :)

I have to sidetrack here to rave about Bag of Love's illustrator. If you've been following Bag of Love's Facebook, you'd know how incredibly talented Jhen is. You see the girl in the picture frame above? The resemblance to MiMi is uncanny! I die a little each time I see the new illustrations, because I'm insanely jealous. I've been daydreaming about getting one done of myself to use on my blog, but I'm so sure I wouldn't be able to afford her talent that I don't even dare to ask for a quotation. LOL!

Go and stalk the FB page, and if you're looking for an illustrator please don't be chicken like me. Send them a message, go.
Alright, back to the bag. This will be more of a first impressions post, by the way. I'll follow up with a review of each product once I've had the chance to really try them out :D

THEFACESHOP Chia Seed Trial Set
(RM79.90-RM99.90 each for full-size products)
THEFACESHOP Chia Seed Moisture-Holding Seed Cream
THEFACESHOP Chia Seed Watery Toner
THEFACESHOP Chia Seed Watery Lotion
This is the set that interests me most, since it's the first beauty product I own using the superfood Chia seed. I've first heard of Chia seed being used in One Love Organics Chia Whip, but considering its scarcity and price, I put it out of my mind. We know Chia seeds are rich in omega 3, even more so than fish oils (here I am nerding discussing omega 3 again), and the fatty acid is known to be anti-inflammatory (by affecting pro-inflammatory cytokine production) - which should help with a clearer complexion - and promote wound healing (by affecting angiogenesis in wound sites). The big fuss kicked up though is about its anti-wrinkling properties, which I'm not too sure of. I think I'll give this one a test run and update you in a few weeks?

Value
RM16.50 + RM21.60 + RM20.00 = RM58.10

Ju Ju Aquamoist Facial Cleansing Wash
120g - RM36.90
I've never heard of this brand before. I tried it once to wash my face, and the combination of feeling squeaky clean yet soft to touch was pleasantly surprising. Almost like having used your Clarisonic and following it with a light moisturizer. (I've been so lazy with both!) Very rich and foamy. I'm not very picky with cleansers since I don't seem to breakout to specific products, so the comfort (ie, no tightness) is what look for. I'm also very partial to foaming facial wash, it just feels better.
Value:  RM15.40

Etude House Moistfull Aloe Skincare 4 Kinds Kit
(RM69.90-RM99.90)
Etude House's Aloe Moistfull Skincare Kit is a mini set that help soothe, alleviate, and moisturize dry and irritated skin. It is enriched with Baobab Tree Extracts and Organic Aloe. It instantly supplies skin with full moisture by penetrating deep into the skin. It helps retain moisture within the skin and leaves it feeling refreshed and hydrated. The set includes Aloe Moistfull Soothing Essence: 15ml, Aloe Moistfull Soothing Skin: 15ml, Aloe Moistfull Soothing Lotion: 15ml and Aloe Moistfull Soothing Cream: 10ml.
Another complete trial set! I really had to decide between this and the Chia seed one, and the latter won. The Aloe Moistfull's main selling point was the lovely color, haha. But Chia seed is relatively new to the beauty scene, so my curiosity for a newcomer won out. I can still remember all the fuss with Aloe Vera when I was little. Plus the 4-step beauty regimen makes the other set seem like a lot less work. I wonder if the full-sized soothing cream comes in a jar too? Hopefully not. The scent is mild and fresh. When I swatched them on my hand, they seem to absorb quickly, but the First Essence was quite sticky.
Value: ~RM35 (only an approximation!)

Freshel Pore Cover BB Cream
50g - RM59
This is the smallest sample in the bag, but the packaging looks so classy it makes up for its size. I swatched the BB cream on my hand:
Freshel Pore Cover BB Cream swatch
Freshel Pore Cover BB Cream swatched indoors under harsh artificial lighting
Under the harsh lighting, you can really see the difference. I never noticed until I was cropping the photos that the backs of my hands were all wrinkly (from lack of moisture, I bet). Yikes. In the last picture where the BB cream was blended it out though, you can see my skin looks just so much smoother! It seemed to fill out the lines and diffuse the harsh unflattering light. I didn't edit these photos besides to crop them. The BB cream was lighter than my skin, but you can see it wasn't a problem. So far so very good.
Value: RM5.90

Polka Dot... by Splassh Nail Polish
14ml - (RM7.90 - RM8.90)
Polka Dot... by Splassh Nail Polish from L-R: Color 46, 048, 034
These look way better in real life! All that sparkle! There's apparently 50 colors included in all the subscriber's bags, so even with 3 bags they all turned out different. For the giveaway, let me know which color you'd prefer! I'll be happy to take the sad unwanted one, because they all look great. LOL. I wonder what other colors there are for the sparkly ones?
Value: RM7.90 - RM8.90

L'Oreal Professionel Liss Ultime Smoothing Shampoo for Unmanageable Hair
250ml - RM50
I bet a lot of you are glad to see this! At the deluxe size of 100ml, this is the best travel companion! Liss Ultime uses Oil Incell technology, which features Argan Oil and Olive Oil to tame unmanageable hair. There's also the Polymer AR technology featuring shielding polymers that provide humidity protection, and the Polytensium technology for intense shine and smoothness. Since it barely lathers, I tend to use too much of it so I only wish that they'd repackage it to a more sheer container. All the better for me to know how much product I have left!
Value: RM20

***

There were no vouchers this month, which I honestly don't mind because I realized that throughout these months I haven't redeemed a single voucher! Is it just me? Do you redeem vouchers in beauty boxes?

The overall value of the bag is at least RM143. That's more than 3.5x the price you pay for! This isn't new, my approximation of the April Bag of Love was nearly 8x the subscription price.

Giveaway
Now on to the best news - I have TWO of the July Bag of Love to giveaway to my readers! And to make it all the sweeter, you get to pick the nail polish shade you want the most ;) So it doesn't matter if you're a loyal Bag of Love stalker subscriber or you missed this month's bag, don't miss the chance to win these goodies. That's a total of 11 products to pamper yourself with!

I'm so dizzy with excitement for this giveaway, because it could just be the treasure that helps unlock the super secret, super in-demand, super limited and exclusive Special Edition Bag!

Here's MiMi's promise...
Since everyone can only focus on the 35 pieces, maybe I should get it over and done with by hinting about it and opening subscription; then only tell you what my excitement for my August monthly bag is?!
Ok, I guess I will do just that - once my FB page hit 2345 likes
...MiMi, you tease!
We're already at 2,305. SO CLOSE. Everyone's so worried they'll miss out on these Special Edition bags, because like she said there's ONLY 35 of them! With that many likes on the Facebook page alone, it's enough to give me an anxiety attack thinking of fighting for one of them! T_T (If you're a Facebook friend that I harassed to like Bag of Love's page - I apologize, but lovers of Bag of Love will die from the suspense otherwise!!)
a Rafflecopter giveaway There are 4 mandatory steps, but many others to increase your chances of scoring one of the bags. Please also follow Bag of Love on Instagram if you have one -  I didn't make it mandatory as some of you don't have IG :) There's also some options you can do daily for a better shot at winning! I'll take my time to check and make sure every entry is valid.

I'm an absolute sucker for pretty packaging too, that's why it's so hard to resist brands like Benefit. Thanks for the brand recommendations, luckily I get to try both of them just from this month's bag alone. :P Hopefully the products will work on me too ;)

    1. Bag of Love is definitely worthy of accolades, it's so cheap and the value for money is unbeatable so far. Plus the way MiMi teases us with hints hook us in even more! Can't help obsessively stalking the page for sneaks haha.

I know right about the August bag! Plus she said no other beauty box in THE WORLD. That's a huge claim. Definitely not to be missed, no matter what the surprise is :D

      You better subscribe!

    1. Actually the generosity is not from me, but from MiMi herself. Hehe. I think I neglected to mention that the two bags were sponsored from Bag of Love.

What nail polish shade did you get??

OMG no luck with the other Special Edition bag, I missed it too T_T The bag is so full of awesome I wanna curl into a ball and sob. But that would be too melodramatic haha. Good luck getting one of the 35 once she opens subscription!

    2. Oh that is so sweet of her ^^ I got the nail polish in the color yellow, which was ok, i dont have yellow, but I can't tolerate the smell though :/

    3. @Farisha Nadia OMG same here! I was waiting like a madwoman in front of my laptop for her to edit the photo, haha. I was devastated that it was out of my budget because I knew it was going to be worth it. Ugh.

I'm so mad at myself, should've just gotten it anyway - the next day I got the Sasa Vanity Trove that had the Nuxe dry oil in it and I so wanted to turn back time T_T

  5. Personally, I've never tried any beauty box or bags before. I just love reading reviews about them! Wish to own one but I actually don't like surprises. Even movies and dramas, I tend to want to know the spoilers first. I love Étude house, secret key and Mizon! Étude house simply because the packaging is just too cute! Secret key for its treatment essence which is exactly like SK-II only cheaper by alot! Mizon for its snail creams! :) shade 034 is the nicest!

    1. Hehe, I have mixed feelings about surprises too. Why don't you give VT a try? I tried their new customizable system, and I literally chose exactly the items I want in my bag. I haven't received it yet but I'll review it when I do :)

I've never heard of Secret Key and Mizon before. But I'll definitely keep an eye out for it, despite how gross snail cream sounds. Haha!

I love your blog, its neat and very professional looking! Glad I have a chance to meet you the other day! Never had so many friends with the same name!

Asian brand that I love would be Etude House and Silkygirl! Everyone should have at least one product from each brand! hehe...

Sabrina is a new epidemic in the blogging world LOL it was fun meeting you and your boyfriend! That nerve-wrecking paperclip game...

It's been ages since I tried Silkygirl, back in 2007 I used their blush but their products have been disappointing. I guess I should revisit the brand :)

  8. Hi, I'm new here. I never tried Bag of Love. I really want it but only available in Peninsular Malaysia. So sad. That is why I want to try my luck to win this giveaway. I love SF Beauty Skin. I would recommend it to you to try this product. It's the best skincare ever! www.sfbeautyskin.com . For nail polish I like 048. Gold sparkle is my favorite. hehe.:)

Actually MiMi already made the bag available to East Malaysia too right since she changed couriers? Only you have to pay a bit extra for postage. But if she doesn't, I certainly wish you luck in winning this! Otherwise kesiannya missing out just because of logistics :S

Best nya new recommendation! Have you tried Neesya? It's quite new and it's Malaysian, but it works! I'll publish the review later :)

  11. Hi there! I always look forward to reading your blogpost.

I, personally have tried the Chia Seed moisturizing gel(sample sachet though). It was good but yet to try the rest. I am also curious about Etude House's products as I've read a number of reviews on their products. Hope to hear about the results of using the items soon. =)

    1. That's so nice to hear coming from you, Serah! :D

It's quite difficult to ascertain the effects when given sample sachets, isn't it? That's why I love these deluxe sample sizes. Glad to hear your experience with it was good, I have high expectations now :P

I'll post a separate review of the two sets once I'm done trying them out :)

      Good luck dear!

      Delete
    2. Yeah. Sample sachets isn't enough to make one plunge into buying the full size especially with sensitive skin. Plus, I still have my current skincare regime to be done with, the Eco Therapy Arsainte range, which are very good too.

Apparently, Chia Seed range and Eco Therapy range have relative similar benefits (as according to the salesperson)

I'll be sure to be waiting for the reviews!

      ;D

  12. I have been collecting Bag of Love since its second, third and fourth bag, they're definitely worth every single penny spent! Now I'm very sad to miss its fifth bag, coz I was too busy with final exam and short semester started a day after my final paper, I had to change my campus summore for short sem and yeah, the next thing I know the Bag of Love subscription is closed (T_T) I really wish I could win 1 from Vixen Deity pretty please ^_^

I have tried many Asian brands but I'd like to highlight Hada Labo, Etude House and Yadah for skincare, and definitely Silkygirl for makeup products. Silkygirl products are getting better day by day. Try their latest 20 Hours Perfect Stay Eyeliner, you wont regret it. Their eyeshadows too are pigmented, and their BB Compact are amazing! Hada Labo's moisturizing lotion gave me the best bouncy skin I can ever imagined upon using it, the moisturizing lotion really helped in moisturizing my skin. it also helped a lot when my skin peeled due to extreme dryness. Etude House, I'm in love with its BB cream. in fact my first BB cream was from Etude House, and it doesnt turn my face into an oil slick either, that's what I love the most! As for Yadah, i swear the Bubble Deep Cleanser is the best ever facial cleanser I ever used. all my blemishes disappeared, my skin became less oily and smoother too! although it can be a bit drying sometimes, Yadah Vitamin Toner and Vitamin Emulsion worked well in caring for my skin after cleansing. I really recommend Yadah Bubble Deep Cleanser to everybody, especially if blemishes and oily skin are your main concern ^_^ check out my review on the product here if you wanna know about my Yadah journey

    http://archereverdeen.blogspot.com/2013/05/review-yadah-bubble-deep-cleanser.html

As for the nail polish color, I really love all three above but I would love to try either 46 or 034 :)

thanks a lot Sabrina for hosting this giveaway, cant wait to know the winners ^_^

    1. I actually missed the June bag! I was too busy with hospital and missed the boat too. But then a happy coincidence, my friend managed to grab one and she gifted it to me (BUT SHE KEPT THE DEFINITE BRUSH T_T) She only bought it for the brush, haha. I'm glad anyway for the rest of the products!

Hada Labo is awesome in hydrating the skin! But I find the lotion to sticky and tiring to pat into the face. HAHA. I'm too low maintenance to work that hard to moisturize :P I'm totally new to Yadah, thanks so much for the recommendation! I'll look into your suggestions. Unfortunately my skin's problem is how dry it is - there's barely any oil on my skin. I guess my main concern is milia, which is such a pain to deal with. Sigh.

Thanks dear, your comment made my day. Good luck!!

      Delete
    2. ahhh, the patting of Hada Labo toner XD well, I sometimes caught myself rubbing the lotion with circular motion on my face, not patting. nak cepat, hehe! Oh, I don't really know a lot about skin problems other than acne, I hope you'll get the right treatment for milia :) And heyy, I know about your June bag story, read it on Bag of Love's page :p So cheeky of ur friend, but you got to try the brush in its virgin state aite ^_~ I haven't used my brush yet, first time dapat foundation brush, busy with class and everything, dunno when I can learn how to use it. I just started using brushes, before this kurang inisiatif & pendedahan in makeup application. taking my baby steps to learn :)

For The face shop, I feel that colours and shades are so suitable for Asian skin! Love it! Best part is the skin does not feel oily! *big smile* As for the nail polish, I LOOOOVE THE PURPLE ONE!!! I have never been disappointed before as she never fails to surprise us all! As for the Asian brands, I would say I love Herbal Essence and The Face Shop as the the shampoo range for herbal essence is wonderful. It keeps my hair bouncy and perfect. The smell is also enticing! For The face shop, I feel that colours and shades are so suitable for Asian skin! Love it! Best part is the skin does not feel oily! *big smile* As for the nail polish, I LOOOOVE THE PURPLE ONE!!! I would even trade a smile for it :) have a great week ahead!

    1. @silver nitrate So glad you love it! She has many many fans lurking around, doesn't she? Oh I thought Herbal Essence is from US, under P&G? They were my first intro to conditioners though, I still remember my using my sister's shampoo and conditioner and being endlessly fascinated with it and how good it smelled. Haven't used in ages. Purple is a great choice! My fave too! :))

I across this post and saw the pinky bag and the two awesome kit that I wanna for so long but never got the right chance!

I never tried Bag of Love before but have heard of it for so many times :D

My favorite Asian brand would be Etude House and Missha as EH are super cute and smell lovely to boot and Missha works super great on me :D

    1. @Mizu chan Haha thanks so much! :D

There's a reason lots of people are raving over Bag of Love, you should give the August one a try and see if you like it?

Missha BB cream is the only thing I've tried, but I don't know what happened to it. Not sure why I stopped using it, if I'm not mistaken it made my skin oily? But the coverage was intense!

  31. Gosh soo many product!! I'm going gaga...And both brands are my favourite!
The body shop never fails me. They're not just a good brand both face product and bodycare product, but I love that they only use natural ingredient for each and every product they have...And the most exciting part is that when they go on SALE, OMG, they're super cheap and I get to borong so much, it last me almost 6 months!!
Honestly, I've not subscribe to any box yet...They are too many boxing company/names around, I'm still doing some 'research' on which box is worth the money. And you just helped me by blogging about what u got this month..Thank you!!

    1. @Hisbaby gurl It *is* a lot, isn't it? Not sure how I'm going to go through the products in time to test it out before a truckload of products in the next bag, LOL!!

OMG yes! The famous Body Shop Sale! I love it, that's actually the ONLY time I ever shop there. After the crazy markdowns, it's hard to look at the usual price tag without feeling like, eh I paid a quarter of this last time!

Did you read the post on Vanity Trove? I'll be posting about the customized one that I received, which is the monthly version (vs the Sasa exclusive version). Bag of Love is more affordable for me personally.

      Thanks for stopping by!

    1. @Thais Magalhães So many recommendations for Etude House so far! I might have to switch it up and use the Etude House set first! I haven't tried Shiseido, probably because of the price point and since I don't really know anyone who uses it, no one to convince me it's worth the price :P

  33. Hey, just want to say that this is a good review. This is the kind of review I wanted to see for beauty bags and beauty boxes. Detailed and good photos with precise pricing value. From my observation, I think bag of love is going in a good direction. For August I have subscribe for both bag of love and lilac box. Uh, but I hate myself for missing the June Bag of Love, wanted a good foundation brush for so long!

    1. @CherryBerry Can I just say your comment made my day? I do try to make it worth a reader's visit :))

Oh I missed the Lilac Box, I really couldn't decide if I wanted to splurge on it. There's actually been no review that convinced me it's a must-have. Bag of Love fits my budget better. Let me know how you like the August Lilac Box later!

  34. Have you tried Bag of Love?
Yupe I have tried Bag of Love and that's why i subscribed to it. It was in fact the first beauty bag i subscribed!
So far, the Asian skincare brand that i like most is Hada Labo especially their lotion! =)
As Polka Dots by Slash nail polish per say, I like the shade 033 which is the hot red! I have been wanting a hot red nail polish for so long...I dont normally haul nail polishs because i scare it will dry up very fast since i cant use it very often due to my studies. So i have to choose some very versatile colour to mix and match with other colour of my nail polish. =)

    1. @Hazel Llyvonne G The Hada Labo lotion definitely works wonders if I have the patience to set aside minutes solely for patting it into my skin (I don't! Haha)

I usually only use soft pinks and beiges myself for french manicures - I very rarely use colors. Too loud for me :S

  35. To be honest, I've not tried Bag of Love yet. I've only just gotten to know it last week when a ex-classmate posted her July bag sometime last week. It really got me excited knowing that I could try loads of beauty products before settling for the ones that suit me best!
I've tried quite a few Asian skincare brands - elianto, The Face Shop, Etude, Skin Food, Hada Labo, just to name a few. I've always been open to trying stuff but I must say I absolutely love elianto Face Mask! So cheap but so good.
I'm looking forward to hear more reviews from you so I can pick my choice better too.
    Thanks! :-)

    1. @Carmine I bought a set of Elianto brushes last time which were absolutely dodgy and useless! But I'm interested in their eyeliner :) Skin Food makes a great potted lip balm, and Hada Labo's Arbutin facial wash is actually not bad - used it for months.

Thanks for recommending the Elianto Face Mask! I just made a major My Beauty Diary mask haul, will try those next :D

    1. @Goh Ai Jene Thank you dear :) Yeah I keep hearing about Silkygirl, I guess they must have improved loads since I last used them (when most of their items were complete duds). It's great to hear because their items are so cheap! I love cheap makeup that works - like NYX. Although I guess NYX isn't too cheap here :S

I have never tried beauty bags before..So, I think it is my chance to do it.
As for asian products, situation is the same. I am planning to use some asian brands, but, unfortunately, there are no such shops in my country. It became my dream to try asian beauty goods.

  39. I've never got the chance to try The Bag of Love. Been thinking whether to start subscribing or not, since I already subscribed for others. I wish I can have one trial bag! Btw, my favorite Asian make up brands are Too Cool For School, Etude House, Tony Moly and Elianto. I hope I win this!
